Welcome Siena Madison Gonzalez!

On January 18, 2008 at 6:22 AM, we welcomed Siena Madison Gonzalez to our little family. She weighed 7 lbs, 3 oz, and measured 19 inches.

Although our official due date was January 29, we had a strong suspicion that Siena would arrive early. Sure enough, around 10:30 PM on January 14, I started to have regular contractions (about every 5-7 minutes). After a few hours of excruciating pain, I called my doctor's after hours number and spoke to some gravelly-voiced nurse who said that it was highly unlikely that I was really in labor because I was a first time mom...it must be pre-labor and I should just "go to bed and try to get some sleep". (We were in the car on the way to the hospital when she told me this). So we turned around, went home, and tried to do just that. Unfortunately the contractions continued and there was no way I would be sleeping through them, so a couple of hours later we jumped back in the car and went to the hospital. Once we got checked in, they confirmed that I was 4 cm dilated and asked me if I was ready for my epidural. After that, Siena was on the fast track for arrival. After minimal pushing, our beautiful baby girl was here!

new diggs

today will be a very exciting time for Heather and I. we close on our first house together. we go at 1pm today for the marathon of paperwork to come. I'll probably have to ice down my arm, like baseball pitchers do after a game, once we're finished w/ everything.

the good thing coming from this is that now we don't have to worry about most of the things from the last post, i.e. my dad moving back into the house. because now, if he comes back for any reason, we won't be living in that house. that makes life so much easier.

luckily the place is move in ready, so we don't have to really do anything to it except for repainting a couple of rooms and moving our new stuff in and get rid of the old stuff. anyone want a really heavy HDTV? but anyways, we're happy and ready to get going. we'll let you know more as is comes along.

someday i will

so as you can see by the posted date, its been over a two years since i have updated this blog. fortunately for you, i have actually been doing stuff. as opposed to just reeeeaaaalllllly trying to finish my SXSW comments from 2005. so in that time, there have been a lot of changes here.

  1. i met someone very special, Heather.
  2. we started dating.
  3. i got a new job.
  4. my Dad went back to Iraq, again.
  5. we moved in together.
  6. i tried a triathlon.
  7. we got engaged!
  8. we started fixing up my Dad's place, but didn't finish.
  9. we moved in to the house anyways.
  10. we went to Vegas for the first time...in July. consequently, it was very hot there.
  11. my Dad came back from Iraq and lived with us.
  12. we went to Jamaica and got married.
  13. has our reception dinner when we got back to Austin.
  14. we moved out of the house into an apartment.
  15. my Dad went back to Iraq, again.
  16. we ignored the house.
  17. we found out we're having a baby!
  18. my Dad came back from Iraq.
  19. i started working on the house again.
  20. my Dad went back to Iraq, again. (see a common theme yet?)
  21. we found out we're having a girl and started registering for stuff.
  22. we're hiring someone to finish the renovations to the house, because...
  23. pretty soon we're going to have to move back into the house again.
so those of you reading carefully can start seeing some common themes. its been a very interesting couple of years. maybe i can elaborate more at some point. but as you can see with my current track record, it might take some time. we'll see.

SXSWin'...Wednesday

this year was going to be my first foray into the SXSW experience. well, i could have gone last year, but i was too lazy. :( anyways, i was looking forward to the whole thing. for those that aren't from Austin or have never been out of there cave, SXSW is a showcase of music, movies, and web stuff. there are shows, viewings, panel, lectures, keynote speakers, parties, and alcohol. i was mainly interested in the music and alcohol part. so i tried to figure out what bands i wanted to see and when. the thing is that there are over 400 bands that play during the 5 days and nights of the conference. the vast majority, i have never heard of. luckily for me, i had Gus, Kat, Thomas, Brian, and Kevin to rely on for some good picks. so, here's how it went.

wednesday...
one thing to note about SXSW is that there are 3 different way to gain admission into these show. one is a badge, that you either get from being in the industry or famous or just volunteering. the second is the wristband, something you buy ahead of time for around $150. both of these methods prevent you from having to pay cover charges and you can leave a venue and get back in at a later time to see another band. if the lines aren't outrageously long when you get back. the last way is plain old cash or the cash crowd or the lazy fucks that didn't buy a wristband. the priority for these three types is badge, wristband, then cash. some places get so big that they cut off access to the cash crowd early or only allow badges. i think next year i'll consider getting a wristband or badge. its definitely worth the price if you wanted to go to a bunch of different places in one night over the next few days. basically for me i had to be choosy. finding the bands i was really interested in seeing and getting to the venue early to see them. sometimes listening to some less-than stellar bands and some really good surprises. anyway.

8p.m. - first off i needed to meet up with one of my old friends that was working on this night. Chris helps out with promotions for the band 54 seconds. they were playing at Elysium that night. it didn't seem like my kind of place, i mean no offense, but maybe lesbian bartenders aren't my thing. that aside, i talked to Chris for a bit to see how she'd been the last few months. but of course, she seemed preoccupied, especially since she was supposed to be "working." so after a bit of talking, she was back to work. the band's sound is a bit tough for me to explain (this will be a theme throughout the blogs of SXSW). when i heard them earlier, they were more experimental in their sound. my first impression was radiohead (post-OK computer) with David Gray as the lead singer. this night they sounded like radiohead (pre-OK computer) with a David Gray lead singer. the singer, the same. the band sound, not the same. so it was considerably more poppy then they were before. maybe they were playing up the record people. who knows, but their good. they play monday night show at lucky lounge. i might catch them again.

9p.m. - after that show i met up with Kat and Gus over at Zero Degrees to check out j.a.m.o.n., a local DJ that spins at Plush. good thing no one was at the door, they were starting their SXSW bit at 9, so that allowed me to sneak in without paying cover. yeah for me. but we walked around the club a bit before the DJ started. another aside, i like house and electronic music, but SXSW isn't really the type of venue for good DJ exposure. he really needs to go to the Winter Music Conference in Miami. he had a good set, but not may people were there. basically it was me, Gus, Kat, the DJ, a friend of his, and some chick that was probably his girlfriend. we were only going to stay there for a short time before hitting Buffalo Billiards to see Mike Doughty, the ex-Soul Coughing guy. so we left. too bad, i mean we took half of the crowd with us. i mean we were half of the crowd. i'm sure i'll catch him a Plush one night, if i haven't already. so on to Buffalo Billiards.

this is where the statement about 'probably should have got a wristband' comes in. Gus (wristband) got in. Kat (badge) got in. me i was the cash whore. so i had to wait in line. and man was is slow. it felt like i was on I-10 in Houston waiting in traffic. it wasn't moving whatsoever. i had to start out in line around the corner of the building. when i did get to the corner, i noticed another line. what another line for the same place? another cash line? wait why would they have a second cash line, oh shit! crapola, it was a wristband and badge line. man if there's a line for that i'm definitely not going to get in to see this guy. so i gave up and headed to the drink to see Duncan Sheik at midnight.

10p.m., well a bit before - so i get there, no line in front and i pay the cover to get in. whoo! nice. the guy at 10p.m. was some guy named Chris Garneau. i'll save you the madness of the link on him, besides it wouldn't be worth it. again harkening back to an earlier quote of 'sometimes listening to some less-than stellar bands', this was one of those occasions. although Gus and Kat have a better story from earlier in the night. you remember those times in your life when you had to do an unpleasant chore before your parents would let you do something fun or meet up with you friends or ever go to the bar. it seems painful, boring, and takes for-ever. this show was that unpleasant thing. i don't know how we all got through it but the crowd persevered to hope for a better tune. it was a two piece band, a keyboard/vocals guy and a guitarist. the vocalist, shitty and painful to hear. wanted to make me drink my sorrows away, and i wasn't even sad about anything. but the guitarist, strangely familiar. seemed quite into the show. i mean his parts weren't elaborate or anything, but he played his heart out. that was kinda refreshing. needless to say, i was glad when it was over.

11p.m. - the next guy up at the Drink was Micah Green. his set was good, not anything i would write home to about. but compared to the set of pain, this was a welcome sound for sore ears. Gus and Kat made it during the middle of his set. its great to see familiar faces again. so, as the SXSW website puts it Micah Green plays 'moody alternative rock.' a good way of putting it. i wasn't really in the mood for it, but it was good. however, he had a weird sounding voice. and that guitarist from the Chris Garneau show was playing in this band. hmmm. anyway, good, but nothing i would put in my CD or mp3 player. but Micah did make some comment about the guitarist playing three shows tonight. three? wait a minute...

12p.m. - so that answered that question. no wonder he looked familiar. because that guitarist guy was Duncan Sheik. who would have though, unless you knew what he looked like. but i would have to say, what a great show. it made the wait worth it. apparently he runs a recording studio and the first two acts were a couple of his buddies that came along for the ride. he played some new stuff, some old stuff from his albums. the best known one of the night being 'wishful thinking' from the 'great expectations' soundtrack. of course why would he want to play his best know song, 'barely breathing'. that's like radiohead playing 'creep' during a live show. (*note: for those that don't know radiohead refuses to play 'creep' live. because it's the song they are known for and they now sound nothing like that band that made that song.*) so instead of playing 'barely breathing', he played a hilarious version of 'wonderwall' by oasis. funny, because he kept screwing up the words. that made the show completely awesome. i'll really have to check out some of his other CDs after his '96 release.

so after this show i was done for the night. i really have no other band that i wanted to see that night, plus i didn't want to pay cover again. so that does it for wednesday. what will be in store for thursday. bands playing songs on broken glass? midget drummers? horney girls willing to makeout with me? probably not. but it should be another promising night of bands and booze, sans hooking up. maybe later. so one night down, three more to go.

SXSW update soon...

i know that i said i was going to get to this posted, and i will. but i'm not the only one slacking on the SXSW stuff either, Gus and Brian are too. we'll get there eventually. i'll try posting something tonight...

ivy does not grow on this wall

i got a letter back from Harvard regarding my admissions application to the school. note that i said letter, not packet, package, or something else...letter. letters are bad, and i got one of those. basically, i didn't get in this year. :(

so, now i know what i need to work on for next year's application. really just working on fine tuning the portfolio and rewriting that horrible essay again. i'm disappointed, but not really disappointed. i knew it was about a 50/50 shot anyways. but i will start to look for architecture jobs now, since working at my current engineering job will only start to hurt my ability to get really good architecture jobs in the future. plus it holds me back from getting my license.

but i will be in Austin for one more year. and who can get pissed about that? hopefully i'll get all my SXSW stuff written here soon. so keep an eye out for that.

jurisprudence...

this isn't really the first post that i wanted for this, but i know it's going to take a while to post up all of on my thoughts on SXSW. so, in the mean time...

well, today i served my civic duty today by sitting as a juror in county court #7. yesterday we had gone through the voir dire proceeding. which is a fancy term for jury selection. this has been the second time that i have been selected for a jury. the first being a felony aggravated assault w/ a deadly weapon case over two years ago. since it was over two years since i had been a juror, i was prime pickins' to be selected again. its no big deal to me. i know there are lots of people out there that was to skirt around the responsibility as a citizen to not be a juror.

so wednesday was the selection period. it was for the charge of indecent exposure, a misdemeanor offense. nothing really exciting (not much of it was), but it was the time that the attorneys were able to question the prospective bunch and find out who had blatant bias that could prevent impartiality. the main problem with this is that they can't be specific about any details about the case being tried or why they couldn't just settle ahead of time. so the state (prosecution) would ask us some general questions and we would have to try to answer as honestly as possible or look like a dumbass. so i didn't look like enough of a dumbass to be rejected from the jury. just my luck.

so i was one of the luck people to be chosen. since this was a misdemeanor case, there was only six jurors. today we met in the morning to wait to hear deliberations. unfortunetly, we were delayed due to the lawyers bickering over the specifics of the future testimony and exhibits. this was the storyline for the day. we would hear testimony then we would go away for like 20 mins. while they argued. one break go so long that it eventually turned into our lunch break. finally both sides rested and came our deliberation time.

basically what happened was that this 16 year old girl, that was on her first day at working at this Sonic drive-in, came up to this guy's car to deliver his order and saw his package. he claimed that he was changing and had no idea that the towel covering his privates had moved. he was basically living in his car at the time it happened. so changing his clothes in the car wasn't suprising. its just that he chose a terrible place to do so.

now came the time where we had to consider the testimony and evidence and come to an agreement on a guilty or not guilty verdict on the charge of indecent exposure. in Texas, indecent exposure is defined as someone showing their genitals or anus with the intent to arouse someone sexually, either themselves or someone else, and be reckless on whether their behavior would offend someone else. we clearly knew that the defendant was reckless in his behavior. even his testimony showed us that. but the intent to arouse someone sexually was the trickier part. none of us could find enough proof to support this part of the case. so we found him not guilty of indecent exposure, but were able to find him guilty of disorderly conduct. disorderly conduct is basically the indecent exposure charge, but without the sexual intent part. there was clearly more evidence there to charge him with that. one thing that surprised me was one of the women in the six person jury couldn't bring herself to believe that a 16 year old girl could know what a hard-on would look like. i dont know what sheltered world she was living in. i imagine she didnt know what a cock looked like until her honeymoon, but regardless it just seems weird that someone would think that a highschool girl wouldnt know anything about the male sex organs. just weird.

anyway, so we came up with the verdict and that was it. our day of service was over. i wont have to to this again for another 2 years. so 2 years from now i can be picked for another jury. great.
